The Amhara region is one of the most affected by HIV in the country, with an HIV prevalence of 3.4% among the adult urban population. Several factors are attributed to the high prevalence rates in the region, including low levels of male circumcision, migration flows from rural to urban areas, sex work related to tourism A=and the major transport routes connecting Amhara to Addis and the Tigray region.
There are 710 adults living with HIV registered with the Beza Association in Lalibela, which has a population of approximately 30,000 people. Therefore HIV prevalence is known to be at least 2.36%.
